enchanting estate near Diamond Head.
Behind the museum's classical facade are airy garden and fountain courtyards. Inside
the galleries are masterpieces by Monet, Matisse and O'Keeffe; galleries of Greek and
Roman antiquities and Italian Renaissance paintings; major works of American modern
art; ancient Japanese woodblock prints by Hiroshige and Hokusai; Ming dynasty Chinese
calligraphy and painted scrolls; Indian temple carvings; war clubs and masks from Papua
New Guinea - and so much more.
Formerly called the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the museum was founded in 1927 by
Anna Rice Cooke, an heiress who created an art collection that would reflect the di-
versity of the island's local population. She wanted this to be a place where children born
in Hawaii could come and examine their own cultural roots - and perhaps just as import-
antly, discover something about their neighbors - all through the window of works of art.
Entry tickets are also good for same-day admission to the museum's satellite galleries
and sculpture garden at Spalding House ( Click here ) . Check the museum website for
more special exhibitions and events, including gallery tours, family-friendly Sundays,
films and concerts at the Doris Duke Theatre ( Click here ) , and social 'ARTafterDARK'
parties with live entertainment, food and drinks.
Validated parking at the Honolulu Museum of Art School lot, just southeast of the mu-
seum (enter off Beretania or Young Sts), costs $3 for four hours (flat rate after 4pm $4).
