AVOIDING CAR BREAK-INS
When visiting Oʻahu's beach parks, hiking trails or 'secret' spots off the side of the
highway, take all valuables with you. Don't leave anything visible inside your car or
stowed in the trunk. Car break-ins - and on Oʻahu, that means not just rental cars
but also locals' vehicles - are common all over the island and can happen within a
matter of minutes. Some locals leave their cars unlocked to avoid the hassles of
broken windows or jimmied door locks.
CAR, MOTORCYCLE & MOPED
Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National have rental cars at Honolulu Inter-
national Airport. Alamo and Thrifty operate about a mile outside the airport off Nimitz
Hwy (airport courtesy shuttles available). It's more convenient to rent from a company
with its lot inside the airport; on the drive back to the airport, all highway signs lead to
on-site airport car returns.
Most major car-rental agencies have multiple branch locations in Waikiki, usually in
the lobbies of resort hotels. Although the best rental rates are usually offered at
Honolulu's airport, Waikiki branches can be less hassle (and less expensive, given steep
overnight parking costs at Waikiki hotels) if you're only renting a car for a day.
In Waikiki, independent car-rental agencies may offer much lower rates, especially for
one-day rentals and 4WD vehicles. They're also more likely to rent to drivers under 25.
Some also rent mopeds and motorcycles, and a few specialize in smart cars and hybrid
vehicles ( Click here ).
Hawaii Campers ( 222-2547; www.hawaiicampers.net ) rents pop-top campervans
equipped with kitchens, memory-foam mattresses and more (from $130 per day plus
