RATES
» The daily rate for renting a small car usually ranges from $35 to $75, while typical
weekly rates are $150 to $300.
» When getting quotes, always ask for the full rate including all taxes, fees and sur-
charges , which can easily add $10 or more per day.
» Rental rates usually include unlimited mileage, though if you drop off the car at a differ-
ent location than where you picked it up, expect a hefty surcharge.
» If you belong to an automobile club or airline frequent-flyer or hotel rewards program,
you may be eligible for discounts when booking car rentals.
» Check online travel booking sites, such as Hawaii Discount Car Rental ( ht-
tp://discounthawaiicarrental.com ) and Hotwire ( www.hotwire.com ), as well as travel bid-
ding sites like Priceline ( www.priceline.com ) for more car-rental deals.
RESERVATIONS
Always reserve rental cars in advance. With most car-rental companies there's little or no
cancellation penalty if you change your mind before arrival. Walking up to the airport
counter without a reservation will subject you to higher rates, and during busy periods it's
not uncommon for all cars to be rented out, even in Honolulu. Joining the rental-car
agency's rewards program in advance can help you shortcut long lines. Reserve child
safety seats ($10 per day, or $50 per rental) when booking your car.
