Car
Most visitors to Hawaii rent their own vehicles, particularly on Neighbor Islands. If you're
just visiting Honolulu and Waikiki, a car may be more of a hindrance than a help. Free
parking is usually plentiful outside of cities and major towns. Some hotels and resorts, es-
pecially in Waikiki, may charge for overnight parking (up to $30 or more).

AAA has reciprocal agreements with automobile associations in other countries (eg
CAAA). Bring your membership card from home.

Driver's Licenses

US citizens with a driver's license from another state can legally drive in Hawaii if they
are at least 18 years old.

International visitors can legally drive in Hawaii with a valid driver's license issued by
their home country (minimum age 18).

Car-rental companies will generally accept foreign driver's licenses written in English.
Otherwise, be prepared to present an International Driving Permit (IDP), obtainable in
your home country, along with your foreign driver's license.
Fuel

Gasoline (petrol) is readily available everywhere on the islands except along more re-
mote roads (eg Saddle Rd on the Big Island, the Hana Hwy on Maui).
