tures. Public transportation exists only on the bigger islands. That said, you'll probably
find it time-consuming and difficult to get around on public buses, except on Oʻahu.
Air
Hawaii's major airports handling most interisland air traffic are Honolulu (Oʻahu), Kahului
(Maui), Kailua-Kona and Hilo (Hawaiʻi the Big Island) and Lihuʻe (Kauaʻi).
Airlines in Hawaii
Two major interisland carriers - reliable Hawaiian Airlines and upstart go! (operated by
Mesa Airlines) - offer frequent scheduled flights in jet planes between Honolulu and the
main Neighbor Islands (Maui, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi the Big Island). Flying between two
Neighbor Islands may require changing planes in Honolulu.
Two smaller, commuter-oriented airlines - Island Air and Mokulele Airlines - provide
scheduled service in both prop and jet planes to the main islands, as well as to Molokaʻi
and Lanaʻi. In mid-2013 Hawaiian Airlines plans to begin offering turboprop service to Mo-
lokaʻi and Lanaʻi with its new subsidiary brand ʻOhana by Hawaiian.
Island Air and a few other tiny airlines - like Pacific Wings - are the only ones that fly to
secondary airports, such as Hana on Maui and Waimea-Kohala on the Big Island. Many
of these smaller airlines also offer charters. Flights in small turboprop planes fly so low
they almost double as sightseeing excursions - fun!
Expect further schedule changes and possible shake-ups in the interisland flight biz.
