Tickets
Hawaii is a competitive market for US domestic and international airfares, which vary tre-
mendously by season, day of the week and demand. Competition is highest among air-
lines flying to Honolulu from major US mainland cities, especially between Hawaiian Air-
lines and Alaska Airlines, while Allegiant Air serves smaller US regional airports.
The ʻlowest fare' fluctuates constantly. In general, return fares from the US mainland to
Hawaii cost from $350 (in low season from the West Coast) to $800 or more (in high sea-
son from the East Coast).
Vacation Packages
Offered by major airlines and online travel booking sites, vacation packages that include
airfare, accommodations and possibly car rental, tours and activities may cost less than
booking everything separately yourself. Pleasant Holidays ( 800-742-9244;
www.pleasantholidays.com ) and Apple Vacations ( 800-517-2000;
www.applevacations.com ) offer competitive vacation packages from the US mainland.
Sea

Popular cruise lines include the following:
Holland America ( 877-932-4259; www.hollandamerica.com ) Departures from San
Diego and Vancouver, British Columbia.
Princess ( 800-774-6237; www.princess.com ) Departures mostly from Los Angeles
but also San Francisco.
Royal Caribbean ( 866-562-7625; www.royalcaribbean.com ) Typically departs from
Vancouver, British Columbia; some cruises start in Honolulu and finish in Vancouver.
GETTING AROUND
Most interisland travel is by plane, but limited ferry services connect Maui with Molokaʻi
and Lanaʻi. Renting a car is usually necessary if you want to really explore; on Lanaʻi and
Hawaiʻi the Big Island, a 4WD vehicle may come in handy for off-the-beaten-track adven-
