B&Bs & Vacation Rentals
B&B accommodations in Hawaii vary from spare bedrooms in residential homes to pull-
out-all-the-stops romantic hideaways. Often family-run operations, B&Bs can provide
more personal experiences than hotels but offer fewer services.
Despite their name, only some B&Bs offer breakfast or stock supplies - usually coffee,
juice, fruit and bread or pastries - in guests' accommodations. Without a state-approved
restaurant kitchen, B&Bs can be fined if caught making hot meals for guests.
B&Bs discourage unannounced drop-ins, so they sometimes do not appear on maps in
this topic. Same-day reservations are hard to get. Always try to book B&Bs in advance,
because they tend to fill up weeks or months ahead of time. Many B&Bs have minimum-
stay requirements of a few nights, though some will waive this if you pay a surcharge.
Typically, a vacation rental means renting an entire duplex, condo or house (with no on-
site manager and no breakfast provided), but many B&Bs also rent stand-alone cottages
and often all these kinds of properties are handled by the same rental agencies. Ask
about cleaning fees, common for stays of less than five nights.
Sometimes B&Bs and vacation rentals will refuse credit cards, instead requiring pay-
ment by cash, traveler's checks or a personal check drawn on a US bank account.
