Environmental Report Card
Wild Hawaii
Among the most dire environmental problems facing Hawaii are feral exotic animals and
the continual introduction and uncontrolled proliferation of invasive, habitat-modifying
plants. Even in Hawaii's protected natural areas, including national parks and state re-
serves, continual funding cuts hamper eradication and rehabilitation efforts.
Hawaii wildlife conservation reports can be depressing reading, but success stories
prove that with enough effort and the right conditions, nature can rehabilitate itself. The
nonprofit Nature Conservancy ( www.nature.org/hawaii ) is deeply involved in Hawaii;
read its ecological assessment and biodiversity conservation plan
( www.hawaiiecoregionplan.info ) online.
