Vegetarians & Vegans
Top-end restaurants almost always include meatless selections, such as grilled veget-
ables, garden pastas and creative uses of tofu. Hawaii's multitude of Asian eateries en-
sures plenty of vegetable and tofu dishes, plus gluten- or lactose-free options, even in
rural towns. Healthy versions of traditional local fare are often available, including meal-
sized salads and grilled-vegetable or tofu sandwiches and wraps.
Finding an exclusively vegetarian restaurant isn't as easy. Vegans, especially, must
seek out the few eateries that use no animal products. When ordering, ask whether a dish
is indeed meatless; soups and sauces often contain meat, chicken or fish broth. The most
economical way to ensure no animal ingredients is to forage at farmers markets, as well
as natural-foods grocery stores and health-food shops, which also stock food for special
diets (eg gluten-free).
