Hanapepe Naturals HEALTHY $
( 335-5100; Awana Rd; meals $4.50-6.50; massage $70-105; 9:30am-6pm; ) A fabulous
little health food shop serving vegetarian bowls of soup and stir-fries, kale salads, tofu
wraps and an entire menu of juices and smoothies. Their main business is bulk spices,
teas and dehydrated foods, which they sell in health-food shops islandwide. The owner-
operator is a gifted massage therapist and Ayurvedic practitioner. Ask about treatments.
Lappert's ICE CREAM $
( 335-6121; www.lappertshawaii.com ; 1-3555 Kaumualiʻi Hwy; 10am-6pm) The famed
Hawaiian ice-cream chain started its operation right here along the highway at this quaint
little roadside shop and factory. They are way too big for Hanapepe-based production
now, but that humble shop still scoops the goodness and remains the business's
headquarters, as it has since 1983.
Bobbie's HAWAII REGIONAL $
( 334-5152; 3620 Hanapepe Rd; mains from $6.95; 10am-3pm Mon-Wed, 10am-2:30pm &
5-8pm Thu-Sat) A small storefront greasy spoon lunch counter offering burgers, pulled
pork sandwiches, fried shrimp and teriyaki chicken plates, as well as BBQ chicken on
Friday nights. It's not good-for-you food, but it does taste pretty damn good.
Da Imu Hut Café CAFE $
( 335-0200; 1-3529 Kaumualiʻi Hwy; meals $7-11; 10am-1:30pm & 5-8pm Mon-Fri) Set in a
rather warehouse-sized Quonset hut on the highway, Da Imu is famous for its Monday-
night Hawaiian buffets, but they serve up fried and teriyaki chicken dinners and
Hawaiian-style BBQ pork combo plates every night. This is the perfect place to pick up
lunch ($6.95) for a drive up to the canyon or a beach picnic.
Wong's Chinese Deli BAKERY, DELI $
(1-3543 Kaumualiʻi Hwy; mains $7.50-9; 9:30am-9pm Tue-Sun) This small Chinese counter
cafe with a rather sprawling attached dining room allows you to pick and mix one to
three dishes from their steam table. They do beef broccoli, lo mein, sweet-and-sour pork
or chicken, and have crispy duck hanging under heat lamps too.
