Kalaheo Steaks & Ribs STEAKHOUSE $$$
( 332-4444; www.kalaheosteakandribs.com ; 4444 Papalina Rd; mains $16-32; 5-9:30pm)
Built and brushed to resemble an Old West saloon, this steakhouse has generated some
buzz among locals. The prime rib is especially popular, but they do all the cuts of steak,
St Louis-style ribs and steamed clams and poke for seafood lovers. It's set one block
from the highway on the makai (seaward) side.
Pomodoro ITALIAN $$$
( 332-5945; www.pomodorokauai.com ; Kaumualiʻi Hwy, Rainbow Plaza; mains $16-27;
5:30-9:30pm Mon-Sat) Unless you know it's there, you'd never expect such a romantic res-
taurant in an unmemorable business mall. But locals always cite Pomodoro for tradition-
al dishes such as veal parmigiana and linguini with white or red clam sauce. With
candlelit tables and white tablecloths, the setting is intimate yet neighborhood casual.
WAIMEA CANYON & THE WESTSIDE
Kauaʻi doesn't get more local than the Westside, where revered traditions and local-style
family pride reign supreme. Here, you're more likely to hear fluent Hawaiian, spot real-
life paniolo (cowboys) and see old-school fishermen sewing their nets than anywhere
else on the island. Deep, riveting red canyons and a seemingly infinite expanse of ocean
offers the widest range of atmosphere and ambience found on Kauaʻi. The least touristy
and the most tried and true, the Westside isn't for everyone; it's good like that.
