Buddhist shrines as the center is a non-denominational sanctuary for all cultures. Among
the luminaries who have found this property to be a source of comfort and healing is the
famed baseball player and manager, Dusty Baker. Visits are allowed only on Sundays,
twice-monthly.
Koloa History Center MUSEUM
( www.oldkoloa.com ; Koloa Rd) Hidden behind the first set of shops on Koloa Rd as
you come from Poʻipu, this tiny, open-air museum has old barber chairs and kerosene
dispensers, plows and saws, yolks and sewing machines, and a few legends tacked to the
walls too. It's worth a quick peek.
Koloa Jodo Mission TEMPLE
( www.jodo.org ; 2480 Waikomo Rd) East of town is the Koloa Jodo Mission, which follows
Pure Land Buddhism, a devotional form popular in Japan since the 12th century. The
Buddhist temple on the left is the original, which dates back to 1910, while the larger
temple on the right is currently used for services.
St Raphael's Catholic Church CHURCH
( 742-1955; 3011 Hapa Rd; mass 7am Mon-Fri, 5pm Sat, 9:30am Sun) Kauaʻi's oldest Cath-
olic church is the burial site of some of Hawaii's first Portuguese immigrants. The origin-
al church, built in 1854, was made of lava rock and coral mortar with walls 3ft thick - a
type of construction visible in the ruins of the adjacent rectory.
When the church was enlarged in 1936 it was plastered over, creating a more typical
whitewashed appearance. It is always open for visitors. Weekday mass is held in the old
church. On weekends, services are held in the nearby new church.
Sugar Hill Monument MONUMENT
( www.oldkoloa.com ; 5371 Koloa Rd) The story of old Koloa's plantation town history is told
on eight plaques and the iron rendering of mill workers that make up this sugar cube of a
monument.
