The main public access is via Wailapa Rd, which begins midway between mile mark-
ers 21 and 22 on Kuhio Hwy. Follow Wailapa Rd north for less than 0.5 miles beyond
Kuhio Hwy and then turn left on the unmarked dirt road (4WD recommended) that be-
gins at a bright-yellow water valve. Break-ins are not an uncommon thing around here,
so be sure to lock your car.

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge WILDLIFE RESERVE

10am-4pm, closed federal holidays) Home to some of Hawaii's endangered wildlife, this
refuge also has sweeping views, as seen from the 216ft sea cliffs where you'll also find
the 52ft lighthouse (under renovation at research time). Here you'll find rare birds,
glimpse occasional breaching whales (November to March) and spinner dolphins.
You'll also see Mokuʻaeʻae Island , which is teeming with protected wildlife - most
often the endangered monk seal can be seen warming itself in the sun.
Na ʻAina Kai Botanical Gardens GARDENS

1pm Tue-Thu, and 9am Fri) In a somewhat over-the-top approach, this husband-and-wife op-
eration pays tribute to Hawaiian culture on 240 acres of botanical gardens. Also on the
grounds: a beach, a bird-watching marsh and a forest of 60,000 South and East Asian
hardwood trees. Turn right onto Wailapa Rd, between mile markers 21 and 22 on Kuhio
Hwy and look for their sign.
Christ Memorial Episcopal Church CHURCH

(2518 Kolo Rd) This charming lava built church boasts nine English stained-glass
windows, beamed rafters and a wooden ceiling, not to mention a backyard cemetery.
Here's proof that the Episcopal church has been on Hawaii for over 150 years.
