Kauapea (Secrets) Beach BEACH
This thick band of powdery white sand extends along massive lava cliffs for more than a
mile, wrapping around two rock reefs, all the way to Kilauea point. It offers a sand bar
ocean floor and sea shells galore, and boasts crystal clear seas that are the domain of bait
balls and (occasionally) marauding dolphins. And the waves are tasty too.
Alas, the swimming here isn't always easy, thanks to that massive shore break, with
frequent close outs and tremendously strong currents that flow along the entirety of the
beach. Swimming is especially hazardous during big swells (common in winter), which
is why it is extremely popular for surfing. It's a local spot, so bring your refined
etiquette. Nudists also dig it here. And if you can handle such, ahem, sights, don't mind
dirt roads and steep(-ish) trails, adore virginal beaches and typically dig sunsets, you will
find Secrets absolutely magical.
However, if the swells are even remotely big or rough, do not go out even knee-high
and don't clamber on the rocky outcrops. In January 2013, two San Francisco men
drowned here. The first was knocked over and dragged out to sea when he least suspec-
ted it. The other went in after him. Respect the waves.
To get here take the southernmost Kalihiwai Rd (there are two), and make the second
right on the first dirt road you find. Drive to the end, park and find the trail at the bulb of
the cul de sac, which leads 200m or so down a steep path to the beach. If you choose to
stroll its entirety (wise choice), be careful as you navigate the rocks, which can be quite
slippery, and be mindful of the tides. Be sure to lock your car and don't leave any visible
valuables behind.

This scenic little stretch of beach, while challenging to find, is tucked away between two
densely vegetated cliffs where the Kilauea Stream meets the ocean. There's no protective
barrier reef, so when the surf is up, waves can pound. A calm summer day is most suit-
able for swimming and snorkeling.
