Kapaʻa Beach Park BEACH

From the highway, you'd think that Kapaʻa is beachless. But along the coast is a
mile-long ribbon of sand that's very low-key and local. While the whole area is officially
a county park called Kapaʻa Beach Park, that name is commonly used only for the north-
ern end, where there's a grassy field, picnic tables and a public swimming pool MAP
GOOGLE MAP .
The south end of the beach is informally called Lihi Beach , where you'll find locals
hanging out and talking story. It's a scrubby thin slab of beach with grass shoots sprout-
ing here and there. Further down the beach are some cemented rock breakwaters that
form shallow natural swimming pools but are a bit of an eyesore. Nevertheless, a good
starting point for the paved coastal path is the footbridge just north of Lihi. To get here,
turn makai (seaward) on Panihi Rd from the highway. Further south is Fuji Beach, nick-
named Baby Beach because an offshore reef creates a shallow, placid pool of water
that's perfect for toddlers. Located in a modest neighborhood that attracts few tourists,
this is a real locals' beach, so be respectful. For swimming, we prefer the beaches north
of the river mouth. The water is far cleaner.

al $165, open water certification $435) Eastside waters are less protected by reefs and chop-
pier due to easterly onshore winds. Therefore diving and snorkeling are very limited
here. Still, this small branch of a Poʻipu-based outfit rents diving, snorkeling and other
ocean gear and can arrange trips to the north- and south-shore sites.
