Kapaʻa
POP 10,699
Downhill and around the corner from the lush, mountainous north shore, Kapaʻa is the
only walkable town on the Eastside, and it has its charms. Although this is not Kauaʻi at
its most beautiful, Kapaʻa has a sunnier, less self-satisfied and strangely more down-to-
earth disposition than elsewhere on Kauaʻi, and the eclectic population of old-timers,
new transplants, nouveau hippies and budget tourists coexists smoothly. A bike- and
footpath runs along the part-sandy, part-rocky coast, the island's best vantage point for
sunrises. Plus, it's still less than 30-minutes to Hanalei. Kapaʻa's downfall? It sits right
along the highway. Try crossing the road during rush hour!
