Wailua has two sides to it. The coast is rather package touristy. Here guests are tucked in-
to neat oceanfront development blocks like happy slices in a pie chart. But if you're after
that wild-palm-grove nature magic for which Kauaʻi is famous, you can find that here
too. Just head to that languid green river - the only navigable one in the state - and fol-
low it up into the Homesteads, where you can access trails that wind high into the moun-
tains and the island's central spine.
