Working with 3D Files
The 3D industry is very extended, with many specialized ields and
applications; every tool has its own specialization that makes it diferent than
other tools. For example, the Mudbox is a 3D application that specializes in
3D modeling and 3D sculpture. And 3D Studio Max provides a complete
solution for building 3D content and animation. Some 3D applications
provide extended capabilities in speciic 3D areas, such as fur modeling
and clothing.
Each of these applications has its own associated ile extension. These
extensions do not allow the iles to be opened in multiple applications.
However, there are some 3D ile formats that do allow the exchange of iles
and resources, such as the DAE format.
Adobe Photoshop provides various methods to use 3D resources and models
in Photoshop. For example, you can use the imported 3D models, models
from the Photoshop 3D shapes, and create 3D models based on 2D layers.
However, the Collada DAE format is the recommended format for importing
3D models and objects to Photoshop, as it is also Photoshop's interchange
format and many third-party applications directly support import and export
of this format (sometimes through plug-ins).
However, Adobe Photoshop supports the import of commonly used 3D ile
formats that can be exported from diferent 3D programs and exchanged
with diferent applications as well. The supported formats that can be
imported to Photoshop are DAE, OBJ, 3DS, KMZ, and U3D. Some of these
formats are common formats that can be used and exported from diferent
3D applications, such as the DAE and OBJ formats. Other formats are related
to speciic applications, such as KMZ, which is a Google 3D format, as we will
cover later in this chapter.
