Working with Repoussé
Many questions have been asked since the last version of Photoshop with
regard to creating 3D text. Many design tasks include 3D text or 3D text
animation. However, designers hoped to create 3D text in Photoshop. Adobe
added the Repoussé feature in Photoshop CS5, which allows you to create not
only 3D text but also 3D content based on 2D paths, selections, and masks.
The new Repoussé feature provides full control over the created meshes
through the Repoussé dialog box, as explained in this chapter. Because of
the importance of this feature and the extended capabilities that the
Repoussé dialog box can provide, I've given it its own chapter. You'll discover
the features available in the 3D Repoussé feature and, through the examples,
how to use these features and their diferent options.
At irst, it was strange for me to see a French word in Photoshop when
working in the English version! So I searched for the word “repoussé” and
found that it refers to a type of artwork that uses metal to create an
extrusion of 2D drawing lines. It makes sense, because the Repoussé feature
turns 2D paths, selections, text layers, and layer masks to extruded 3D
content with diferent styles of bevels, materials, and shape presets and
