11.1 who are you?
you were brought in to save the day. you were hired as the savior of their EPm (Enterprise
Performance management)/BI (Business Intelligence)/Analytics/reporting or the what-
ever internal abbreviation your company uses for Essbase. you probably were not there
when they selected it, bought it, nor even when they implemented it, but you are now
responsible for it. It is clear to anyone with a resting pulse that the existing system is
nowhere near its potential. you have a ton of ideas on how to improve it, but you have
been bogged down with the day-to-day maintenance issues. Then the moment you were
praying for comes. management approves a project to enhance or expand the function-
ality of the system—you have an opportunity. This is not an opportunity for failure. This
is an opportunity to make things right, solve world hunger and poverty, well, maybe
not that . This is an opportunity to really make an impact at your organization, improve
the roI (return on investment) of the system, and make you and Essbase shine. These
moments are rare and should not be squandered.
Though your title does not say it, you are your company's internal Essbase consultant.
Internal consultants serve internal clients as trusted advisors and:
•  Assist their clients with solving problems and resolving business issues
•  help implement solutions that are strategic to the organization
•  Assist their clients in achieving effectiveness, profitability, or increased
performance
•  Bring a specialized expertise in a specific discipline, such as human resources
(hr), training, Information technology (It), Business Intelligence, Finance,
etc.
•  Act as change agents for their organization and help implement change
initiatives
Impressive, is it not? It does it your job description. Internal consultants are simi-
lar to external consultants in that they need to have strong consulting skills, such as
technical expertise, project management skills, and business acumen, and the addi-
tional advantage/burden of knowing the company's systems and culture from the
inside.
you are the linchpin to this Essbase project's success because only you know Essbase
and your business. you uniquely have the ability and opportunity to bring tremendous
value to your organization.
