1.5.1 Evolving Location of Logs
As Essbase has evolved so has the location and number of log files. The basic log files
are the Essbase.log and the individual application logs. table 1.13 shows how these files
have changed. I have hopes that going forward with 11.1.2 the log files will continue to
be in a consistent area.

Monitoring Activities
Recommendations
Application
•  Setup monitoring of the services, system daemons, and tCP ports for the
applications and database.
Application and database
backups
•  Confirm both your application and database backups are scheduled and
monitored. When you need a backup, it is critical the process is working.
CPu
•  CPu spikes for periods of several minutes can be normal when
calculation and system design is optimized or during periods of heavy
load. Full use of all CPus for over 30 minutes is cause for concern.
memory
•  Ensure at least 10% of system memory is free. In situations where you are
below this, consider increasing system memory or reducing Essbase
caches.
Disk space
•  Both operating system and application disk space should be monitored
and automated alerts for drives that are within 25% of their established
maximum.
Disk queues and wait
times
•  If you notice the system is always waiting on resources investigate
memory, CPu, and disk.
SAn monitoring
•  Storage Area network (SAn) devices are now a standard infrastructure
component. hey tend to be shared by many servers and can act as a
performance bottleneck if not properly configured, low on internal
caches, or many servers are using the same SAn port.
