So, a query for [televisions] (a level-1 member in the [Product] dimension) would
involve pushing the needle through that spot on the card and lifting the cards up. The
cards that did not lift would be [televisions]. of course, I could only fit a portion of the
metadata onto the card; that is why you notice the members in Figure 7.2 above indi-
cating where some members have been left out.
Manual Calculation —here was no way to add up any fact data printed on the card. This
system was useful only in querying to find the subset of cards with the specified metadata.
7.3.1.2 The Query Needle The actual query was done by the use of a “Query-needle”
or “Sorting-needle” (Figure  7.3) that was passed through the deck of cards for each
