dealt with the sun's increased brightness by safely tucking carbon away in carbonate
sediments at the bottom of the sea and by burying the bodies of dead carbon-rich photo-
synthetic beings.
We have been working for some time now with a cognitive way of understanding
how our animate Earth has regulated her temperature over geological time in the face of
a brightening sun. Now it is time to engage in a more intuitive way of entering into this
knowledge, by means of an extended experience of the long-term carbon cycle.
A Carbon Journey
Go to your Gaia place, and take in the colours and sounds that surround you. Be-
gin the journey when you are calm and relaxed.
You are a carbon atom locked up in limestone rock at the bottom of the sea. For
the last 300 million years you have experienced nothing but the cold pressure and
seeming immobility of solid rock around you. Nothing but the ancient, peaceful
silence of the rock. No movement, no sound, no change, just the immense repose
that has engulfed you for time beyond memory. Settle into the feeling of immense
tranquility that surrounds you.
You experience a slow sinking feeling as the sea floor that carries you from below
slowly approaches the edge of a continent, dragging you downwards into the
depths of the Earth.
Feel the temperature and pressure increasing as you sink down into the dark
depths. It's so hot now that the limestone you are part of begins to melt, merging
with the silica that surrounds you.
Feel the intense heat and pressure. The chemical bonds holding you to your cal-
cium atom vibrate with an agonising intensity. You are shaken about like a pea in
a box. The shaking is so extreme now that you realise that you are being liberated
from the limestone.
You feel awake and excited. You tingle with anticipation.
