CAM Software
CAM stands for Computer Aided Manufacturing and refers to the use of software applica-
tions that create instructions in G-code that drives machines for manufacturing of products.
In our case the machines are 3D printers. The CAM program imports the STL File (or other
format) and converts into slices or layers and generates G-code (or other format) that the
printer uses for printing. This kind of software is commonly called “slicer”. The software
might be included when you purchase a 3D printer, but for RepRap BYO enthusiasts there
are free software that can be downloaded. Slicer software includes: Slic3r, Kisslicer, Skein-
forge, Cura and Miracle-Grue.
