In-Depth Information
NURBS, is a way to mathematically describe forms and is useful for drawing accurate
complex curved forms such as a sports car or a human body. NURBS is included in some
programs such as Rhino, Maya and 3ds Max.
Sculpting modeling programs includes Zbrush, Sculptris and Mudbox etc. A lot of other
programs also offer in-built sculpting tools. Most sculpting programs use mesh-based geo-
metry where objects can be pushed, pulled, smoothed, pinched, twisted, pressed or other-
wise manipulated quite like a real sculpture.
Polygonal modeling or “meshes” is based on many polygonal forms mainly triangles ar-
ranged in a mesh that forms an object. These programs are often used in animation, films
and games industries. They are not the optimal choice for designing products and manu-
facturing since the designs are often not “watertight” there might be problems with cracks,
holes and self-intersection. Polygonal programs include Blender, Maya and 3ds Max.
Parametric modeling programs work like excel spreadsheets, if one dimension is changed
the other dimensions in the design is also automatically changed correspondingly. It is
very useful if the designed object is following a strict plan, but if big changes are to be
made there might be problems. Programs that include parametric tools are the Rhino based
Grasshopper, Catia based Digital Project, Autodesk Revit based Dynamo etc.
