3D printing of Chocolate is in its starting phase and will with certainty gain a foothold in the
market. There are a number of possibilities and applications that are commercially viable not
only when it comes to chocolate but also candy and cakes. Further back in the experiment-
al pipeline is 3D printing of meat, which the company Modern Meadow is experimenting
with. Modern Meadow is a US start-up that was launched in 2012 partly founded by a dona-
tion from the founder of Paypal Peter Thiel. MM's mission is to develop 3D printed meat in
order to address environmental and other problems connected to raising livestock. Printing
of meat faces the same problem as printing of organs, for a bigger chunk like a juicy steak
blood vessels that feed the center of the steak is needed. Minced meat equivalents will be an
easier task to accomplish, but the perfect steak is many years away.
NASA has done experiments with 3D printing of food for astronauts, as a way of handling
food logistics in space. . 3D systems and “Sugar Labs” launched its 3D printer ChefJet on
the CES Fair in Las Vegas in January 2014. The ChefJet is the first commercial food printer
and it prints sugar with different taste variations such as chocolate, vanilla, mint, sour apple,
cherry and water melon.
Italian pasta giant Barilla is developing “pasta printers” for restaurants, their idea is to sell

cartridges with pasta for the printers
. Spanish company Natural Machines launched a
Kickstarter campaign for their food printer “Foodini” in the spring of 2014. Foodini offers a
technology to form the food the way you want, while you supply the food ingredients your-
self.
