Automotive
Automotive has been a targeted customer sector already from the outset of 3D printing in the
[xvii]
end of the 1980s. Ford bought the third 3D printer ever made in the 80s
and is using 3D
printing in its prototyping processes like many other automobile manufacturers. The main
application has been and still is the prototyping of new car models and parts. However ex-
ceptions are starting to become more frequent. The Urbee 2, a hybrid futuristic car, has it
body 3D printed in plastic. In 2014, “Strati”, a fully 3D printed car by Local Motors, made
its debut. Printing of out of stock auto parts and parts for classic cars has commercial poten-
tial and is likely to increase. Short run production of sports cars, like Koeningsegg, is also a
field where direct production of 3D printed parts is on the rise.
