In-Depth Information
China would not be China if they did not take up the low-cost consumer 3D printer chal-
lenge from USA and Europe. Except from the already established Up! printer from Tier-
time, many newcomers have been trying their luck in the 3D printer industry in recent
years. It remains to be seen if brand names like Xery, Mbot, Winbo, Dreammaker, MakeX,
Uncia etc. will survive the competition.
The latest surge in 3D printing development in China is partly connected to “Shanzhai”,
which in its original meaning referred to the copycat or counterfeit electronics production
in Shenzhen. However, in the 3D printing context the connotation is more positive, al-
though rooted in the harsh culture of manufacturing pirated electronics, it also implies de-
velopment of the original products and an open source maker culture.
