The Supplementary Rules for the design of slender deep beams can be
summarised as follows:
Step 1:
Determination of maximum compressive stresses.
Based on the elastic stress distribution in the deep beam, the greater
of the maximum vertical and horizontal axial stresses are used to
calculate the additional moments in Step 3.
Step 2:
Calculation of effective height,

The recommendations described in Section 10.3.1 are applicable
when the following conditions a-c are satisfied; otherwise Appendix
C of the CIRIA Guide should be used.
(a)
The web panel is rectangular and braced.
(b)
The web panel has effective lateral restraint on a minimum of
two opposite edges.
(c)
The nominal average shear stress (

) is less than 50% of
the average axial compressive stress in the vertical or horizontal
direction of the panel, whichever is the greater, where

total shear force on a vertical section due to the applied loads,
