pages or at a maximum a 7- minute read; you may want to keep it to two
sides of one page. If the decision is on a four-page newsletter structure it
as follows:
Page 1: this is the 'grab' page and it should grab the attention of the
reader and encourage them to read further. Place new seasonal items,
innovations and ideal topics on this page;
Page 2: this is the page for the news stories, a photograph of the busi-
ness owner and an editorial;
Page 3: key stories go on this page and ideally ones from customers,
for example their favourite recipes;
Page 4: the 'relaxation' page where short stories can be placed as well
as upcoming events and community news. At the bottom of this page
always promote the business as a final reminder.
Always be on the lookout for newsworthy items. There are four elements
to look for:
Human interest: people like reading about people;
Timeliness: news on something about to happen;
Uniqueness: something the reader does not know about;
Novelty: the unusual.
Be selective. Do not cram too much information into the newsletter, a few
well written items is better than a whole pile of information;
Use colour to highlight and liven up the newsletter;
Seek reader feedback. Most people will not bother, but give them the op-
portunity to give feedback if they desire.
Many business say they would love to produce a newsletter, but do
not have the time. This is a task that can easily be designated between the
team to ensure the job gets done. Develop a template for the newsletter
and then keep to that template. The owner should be the editor, not the
writer.
