The Taste Awards
There are numerous Taste Awards around the world, but one of the best
models is the Great Taste Awards in the UK ( www.greattasteawards.
co.uk) held by the Guild of Fine Foods as this covers a whole range of
foods.
The Great Taste Awards are the British Oscars of the food industry and
a benchmark for speciality food and drink. The awards are judged by over
400 judges and take 50 days of judging. Winners have a huge marketing
advantage and the culinary tourist will search them and their product
out. This type of award can really grow the culinary food sector. Regions
that do not have such an award should be encouraged to develop similar
promotions.
In Australia there is an example of a more specific awards programme
with the Australian Grand Dairy Awards, 14 which are held each year.
Food Thinkers
Fig. 9.3. The hero team in the publicity brochure of Ludlow Food Hall, UK.
Traditionally the hero in the industry was the celebrity chef, but the
industry as well as consumer perceptions have moved on. 'Food
Thinkers' include celebrity chefs, farmers, food critics and a host of
other different people who can engage with the community to develop
food tourism. Identify who are the 'characters' and food thinkers in
your community who can work within the region to develop the cu-
linary tourist offer.
