Term
Description
Builder
One who compiles pieces into a coherent whole; the
term here applies in context of governance,
management, builders, operations, users, and
leaders where a builder establishes a business or
technical service and transfers the end product to
operations to oversee ongoing use.
Business capability
A state of being where the enterprise (the
organization) is able to perform an activity, or the
ability to perform an action.
Business driver
A motivation that finds root in the core reasons for
the existence of the organization; an expression of
motivation to further stakeholder interests.
Business need
The lack of something within the organization; a
condition requiring something to fill a void, e.g., a
new service, a new product, a new product feature,
the business to sustain a revenue stream.
Business objective
A purpose to be achieved to further organizational
progress.
Cause
To bring on the occurrence of something; i.e., the
performance of X leads to the occurrence of Y in a
consistent manner, and therefore X is the cause of
Y.
Certification and
accreditation (C&A)
A formal process to validate the presence and
effectiveness of security controls.
Characteristic
A distinguishing trait or property.
Chief information officer
(CIO)
A CIO has responsibility for organizational
information. Note: the title is not chief information
technology officer; the CIO responsibilities are for
information, not just information technology.
Class
A group consisting of entities with the same or
similar characteristics.
Classification
The act of assigning entities to a class.
Coincidence
To occur at the same time without causal connection;
i.e., the occurrence of X and the occurrence of Y,
but each is not the cause or a reliable predictor of
the other.
