Chapter 2
the iA 2 Framework
2.1 introduction
The Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA) is one approach to developing an enter-
prise architecture. The FEA is based on a commercial model, the Zachman Frame-
work. The Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) is based
on FEA. All of these EA approaches offer views that include business architecture,
data architecture, application architecture, and technology architecture. A com-
mon construct within EA is the reference model. FEA provides reference models
for performance , business , services , technology , and data . These reference models pro-
vide templates to capture the line of sight from the business to the technology that
supports the business.
he IA 2 approach is exclusively for information assurance. You may use IA 2
to integrate IA into FEA, Zachman, DoDAF, or other enterprise architecture
approaches to effectively identify and address business risk. All too often security is
an afterthought that causes service delays and increases organizational risk by not
integrating with business processes, performance goals, and technical solutions.
Identifying risk and inserting appropriate risk mitigation throughout the EA pro-
cess and overall enterprise life cycle management (ELCM) is more efective than
after-the-fact bolt-on of IA. IA integration from inception is far more efficient from
the perspectives of development and implementation cost, operations, and overall
performance value. The enterprise architect or the IA architect should apply IA 2
throughout the enterprise architecture (EA) process.
