How to Use Frameworks
A framework is an outline, a guide, a cognitive tool. When faced with a situation,
issue, problem, or challenge, consider which frameworks may apply. Create a docu-
ment with sections for introduction , background , scope , environment , and problem
definition, , and then insert the appropriate framework outlines to guide brainstorm-
ing techniques.
The first round of inserting detail is an uninterrupted streaming effort. Go at
it and let it go. Jump from topic to topic and let ideas flow. Often you will find
that you add or rearrange the frameworks to fit the emerging method to address
the situation at hand. This is fine. Actually, this is more than fine. Modifying the
frameworks to fit your needs shows you are taking ownership of the problem and
are gaining fluency with the idea of using a frameworks approach. Will you use
every detail you create during the brainstorming sessions? Probably not; however,
keep discarded ideas. The opportunity to use them may emerge later or in a differ-
ent situation.
Following the initial rounds of brainstorming, walk through the frameworks
methodically. Review each framework and critically consider if that framework
applies to the situation at hand. Review the details under every section of each
framework and critically consider if the details apply to the situation at hand. Ask
yourself if the details are complete, and then revise according to need.
