Personal Development
Addressing how to maintain a qualified IA workforce is part of the IA architec-
ture. he IA 2 Framework provides six IA 2 views, one of which is people . he IA 2
people view addresses individual psychology, ethics, group dynamics, politics, and
professional development, including the continual development of IA profession-
als within the organization. Security is dynamic. Successful IA programs require
continually improving IA professionals under the guidance of an IA professional
development program.
Business drivers behind an IA professional development program include entic-
ing quality people to join the organization. One way to hire and keep quality IA
people is to keep them engaged in enterprise activities, exposed to current industry
trends and practices, and to train them. Strategic business objectives drive technol-
ogy; both business and technical risk drive IA. An IA professional development
program includes business, services, and technical mechanisms all in the name
of identifying and resolving organizational risk. The organization puts forth the
expense of hiring the best available; they should invest in keeping them the best to
keep them at all.
A good story of IA professional development may carry the title “The Never-
Ending Story.” Take personal responsibility for your own education and encour-
age other IA professionals to do the same. Supplement core knowledge with
readings in classical thought, philosophy, psychology, business, finance, your
industry, etc. Such readings provoke new perspectives, increase personal knowl-
edge, and spark ideas to contribute to industry knowledge. Adopt learning max-
ims like the following:

“I am still learning.” —Michelangelo
“Always work hard. Always improve. If your current employer isn't willing to
pay you what you're worth, your next one will.” —Zig Ziglar
“Even when walking in the company of two other men, I am bound to be able
to learn from them. The good points of the one I copy; the bad points of the
other I correct in myself.” —Confucius
“It's what you learn after you know it all that really counts.” —Harry Tru-
man (advice to college students who seem to think they know it all)
“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” —Derek Bok
