The use of individually isolated enzymes instead of live fungal biomass is
attractive because of the following potential advantages:
t Less likely to be inhibited by toxic dyes
- Some dyes are toxic to white rot fungi [89]
t Less susceptible to change in eluent quality such as pH,
salinity, and temperature
t Can be added at a controlled rate
- Does not require start-up time
t A faster kinetics
t Can be produced in more controlled, optimized cultivation
conditions
- Textile industry effluent may not be the best culture
media for ligninolytic fungi
- May be more energy efficient
- Genetically-engineered strains may be used to produce a
large quantity of enzymes [114]
t Little to no sludge production
