that these dyes contain multiple sulfonate groups, which enhance the water
solubility and limit the assimilability by bacteria [1]. In addition, partial
degradation of azo, diazo, and triazo dyes may result in the release of aro-
matic amines that are carcinogenic [10,11]. Examples of such degradation
byproducts include benzidine (4,4'-diaminobiphenyl) and 2-nitroaniline
(Figure 6.9).
