nature. The major impacts of residual dyes in the receiving water bodies
are as follows:
t Visual and aesthetic efect - Unnatural color in river and
lake water provokes public attention and protest.
t Depletion of dissolved oxygen due to high organics load-
ing [7] - This disturbs the aquatic ecosystem such as fish,
aquatic animals, and macro- and microinvertebrates.
t Prevention of sunlight penetration - Residual dye absorbs
visible light and prevents the growth and photosynthesis of
algae and plants, disturbing the aquatic ecosystem.
t Toxicity - Many dyes and their breakdown products are
acutely and chronically toxic to fish and aquatic organ-
ismsĀ [5,6]. Aromatic amines are carcinogenic.
