The fire originated in the third expansion section with its epicentre in the area of
transversal ties 5-10, and spread to parts of the first and second sections. From the results
of a detailed assessment investigation of the steel load-bearing structure of the mono
block, it was concluded that the steel structure of the third expansion section—diagonal
ties 1-12 in all column orders from A-K—was irreparable damaged by the fire, so this
section of the structure must be completely disassembled (Figure 2.30(a), (b)).
After the spatial stability of the structures in the first and second expansion sections
had been secured, a complete assessment of all load-bearing structures was performed,
and material tests and necessary adaptations were proposed.
