Figure 2.19 shows the failure of the left-hand part of the lower gate in the left lock
chamber of the Gabèíkovo water works system [24]. This part of the lower gate consisted
of a steel structure 21.95 m high and 19.28 m wide. The height of the closed cross-
sections of the main girders was 2.0 m. The 20 mm thick skin plate in the upper part was
of length of 3.5 m and in the lower part 3.67 m. It was made of 11.503.1 steel and in the
central, most stressed area, was of length 14.78 m and made of 15.422.5 material. The
rear wall consisted of three vertical 35 mm thick main girders in the lower and upper
parts on the length of 4.0 m, and was made of 15.422.5 material. Similarly, 16.0 mm
thick lateral walls in the central part were made of 15.422.5 steel. The main girders were
joined with two horizontal binders of closed profile.
