4.8 Finding capacity reserves in original structure by accurate
assessment of its actual operation
4.8.1 Introduction
By assessing the actual operation of the original structure more accurately, it may be
possible to find some reserve capacity. The extent of reinforcement can be reduced if
such reserves can be established and used, which reduces the material and time needed
for the refurbishment. The procedure used to find capacity reserves in a structure is
shown in Figure 4.46. The capacity reserves of a structure can be determined by an
accurate static calculation in which the factors determining the capacity of the structure
(loading, static scheme, calculation model, steel strength) are considered in more detail
than they were in the original design.
