vate partnership or private companies is necessary for organized retailing

15.7.8 IMPORTS
In order to meet market demand, imports may have to be increased dur-
ing the years when crop losses are higher. But imported fruit would be
expensive and it may not be affordable for large portion of the population.
Nevertheless, it is must for food security and such arrangements may well
become strategically very important in the future. Such international trans-
port/shipments need to be environmentally sustainable.
15.7.9 UTILIZATION OF DAMAGED FRUIT
Fruit affected by frost injury and hailstorm can be used in processing
provided fruits are picked immediately after frost damage and sent for
processing to avoid fungal infection. Total loss from frost and hailstorm
injury to fruit can be alleviated to some extent by spray of fungicides like
benomyl and carbendazim immediately to avoid fungal infection. Extent
of damage by these vagaries of weather would determine the loss and util-
ity of fruit.
15.7.10 STRENGTHENING PROCESSING INFRASTRUCTURE
Efficiency of the processes in product manufacture needs to be improved
for less energy consumption. Outdated machinery needs to be modernized.
15.7.11 COTTAGE SCALE AND HOME SCALE PROCESSING
Large quantities of fruit do not reach market and processing units due to
various reasons. Processing in villages at cottage scale would provide nu-
tritional security to rural masses and avoid losses in the changing scenario
of global warming.
