In-Depth Information
MPLS Multiprotocol Label Switching. A technology for the delivery of IP services using an
efficient encapsulation mechanism. MPLS uses labels appended to IP packets or Layer 2
frames for the transport of data.
MTU
Maximum transmission unit.
N+1 redundancy
A single WLC acts as the backup for multiple WLCs.
N+N redundancy WLC redundancy scheme of overprovisioning of two controllers so that
if either controller fails the wireless network is not impacted.
N+N+1 redundancy WLC redundancy the same as N+N with one additional WLC acting as
a backup for multiple WLC pairs.
NAT Network Address Translation. NAT converts internal IP address into globally unique IP
addresses.
NAT-PT
Network Address Translation - Protocol Translation.
NBAR
Network-Based Application Recognition. An intelligent classification engine.
ND
Neighbor discovery.
NetFlow Gathers information on every flow in a network segment. Cisco's NetFlow allows
the tracking of IP flows as they are passed through routers and multilayer switches.
NetStumbler
Identifies wireless networks using 802.11a/b/g WLAN standards.
network access control policy A document that defines general access control principles
used and how data is classified, such as confidential, top secret, or internal.
Network Admission Control (NAC) Protects the network from threats by enforcing securi-
ty compliance on all devices attempting to access the network.
network virtualization
Encompasses logical isolated network segments that share the same
physical infrastructure.
NMAP (Network Mapper) NMAP scans large networks or one host. It is an open source
utility used for network exploration/security audits.
OA M
Operations, administration, and management. For network operations and manage-
ment.
OSPFv2 Open Short Path First Version 2. A link-state routing protocol that uses Dijkstra's
shortest path first (SPF) algorithm to calculate paths to IPv4 destinations. Defined in RFC
2328.
OSPFv3 Open Short Path First Version 3. A link-state routing protocol that uses Dijkstra's
shortest path first (SPF) algorithm to calculate paths to IPv6 destinations.
packet and cell switched
Connections that use virtual circuits (PVC/SVC) established by the
service provider.
partial-mesh topology
Has fewer virtual circuit connections than a full-mesh topology.
