ASBR Autonomous System Boundary Router. Connects the OSPF backbone to external net-
works. Routers that inject external LSAs into the OSPF database (redistribution).
authentication
Establishes the user's identity and access to the network resources.

Describes what can be done and what can be accessed.
accounting
Provides an audit trail of activities by logging the actions of the user.
BGP Border Gateway Protocol. Routing protocol used to exchange routing information
between autonomous systems.
BHT
Busy-hour traffic. Expressed in Erlangs.
broadband cable A technology used to transport data using a coaxial cable medium over
cable distribution systems.
BW Bandwidth. Metric used to determine the best path to a destination network. The high-
est bandwidth is preferred.

The cabling in the data center is known as the passive infrastruc-
ture.
CAC
Call admission control. Used to control the bandwidth or number of calls from a site.
CAPWAP
Control and Provisioning for Wireless Access Points.
Catalyst switch Combines firewall, IPS, SSL VPN, IPsec VPN, DoS mitigation, and virtual
services to build in to security zones.
CCS
Centum Call Second. One call on a channel for 100 seconds.
CDP Cisco Discovery Protocol. Cisco proprietary protocol that can be used to discover
Cisco network devices. CDP is media and protocol independent, so it works over Ethernet,
Frame Relay, ATM, and other media.
CDR
Call Detail Record.
Centrex With Centrex services, the CO acts as the company's voice switch, giving the
appearance that the company has its own PBX.

Data connections that can be brought up when needed and terminated
when finished.
