100BASE-TX
IEEE specification for Fast Ethernet over UTP media.
802.1X An IEEE media-level access control standard that permits and denies access to the
network and applies traffic policy based on identity.
ABR
Area Border Router. Routers that connect to more than one OSPF area.
acceptable-use policy A document that defines the roles and responsibilities within risk
management and should have clear explanations to avoid confusion.
access control Ensures that users and devices are identified and authorized for entry to their
assigned network segment.
access control lists (ACL) Control what traffic is allowed on the network. ACLs are used on
routers, switches, and firewalls to control access.
access layer Provides workgroup and user access to the network. Provides user access to
local segments on the network. It is characterized by switched LAN segments in a campus
environment.
access VPN These VPN connections give users connectivity over shared networks such as
the Internet to the corporate intranet.
accounting
Provides an audit trail of activities by logging the actions of the user.
accounting management
Refers to keeping track of circuits for billing of services.
ACD
Automatic call distribution systems route calls to a group of agents.
Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) A high-performance firewall appliance with intrusion
prevention system, antivirus, IPsec, and SSL VPN technologies integrated into a single unified
architecture.
administrative distance Rating of the trustworthiness of a routing information source. An
administrative distance value is assigned to each routing protocol, static, or connected routes
on Cisco routers.
