In-Depth Information
2.
Recommend creating a hierarchy with core, distribution and access layers. Create
Nexus 7000 VDC for the core layer. Use Layer 3 links rather than Layer 2 links to
prevent spanning-tree loop broadcast storms.
3.
Network virtualization would be implemented using VLANs and 6500 running in a
Virtual Switching System (VSS) pair. Device virtualization is achieved using Nexus
7000 virtual device contexts (VDC) for the core, edge, and server distribution layers.
4.
All hubs need to be replaced with switches. All switches should be replaced with PoE
switches to provide power to future IP phones and wireless access points. All new
switch purchases should be PoE-capable LAN switches.
5.
Create an Nexus 7000 VDC enterprise edge layer that separates the campus LAN and
the enterprise edge. Reuse the 6500s in a VSS pair for the campus distribution layer.
6.
Create a Nexus 7000 VDC server distribution and Nexus 5000/Nexus 2000 access
layer on which to place all servers with support for 1GE/10GE and the AS/400 main-
frame. The Nexus 5000 also support Unified fabric for future Fibre Channel over
Ethernet (FCoE) requirements.
7.
The distribution layer has several functions:
Address summarization
Security access lists
Broadcast domain definition
VLAN routing
Media translation
8.
Recommend allocating /30 subnets for the links between the core and distribution
switches. Allocate separate IP subnets for the future IP phones and servers. This lets
you apply security policies. Also allocate separate IP subnets for wireless LAN net-
works.
9.
Recommend splitting the IP subnet into separate /24 IP subnets as needed with 30
percent for future growth.
10. The solution shown in Figure 16-6 is a hierarchical network with core, distribution,
and access layers. Building access and separate server farms are used. Distribution
switches are used to allocate security policies and route summarization. The solution
is scalable and will support the growth plans of Falcon Communications. PoE
switches are deployed to support the future UC deployment.
