Several exceptional routes in Kalinga province include half-day forays into nearby vil-
lages, and several-day grinds terminating as far away as Tabuk or Abra province. With
some luck you'll encounter traditional villagers, distinguishable by elaborate chest tattoos.
CALLAO CAVE
Cave
The seven-chambered Callao Cave is reached by walking up 184 steps, but a must-do ex-
cursion if you're in the area is to hire a bangka (a wooden outrigger boat) near the cave
and head 15 minutes upriver to watch tens of thousands of bats pour out of the caves for a
flight over the Pinacanauan River at dusk.
MT IRAYA
Volcano
North of Basco, Mt Iraya (1009m), a dormant volcano that last erupted in AD 505, can be
climbed in about five hours and descended in three, though the summit is usually ob-
scured by clouds.
