S OUTHEAST L UZON
MORIONES FESTIVAL
Festival
This fabulous seven-day Easter festival turns Marinduque's streets into a colourful re-
enactment of a play based on the story of Longinus - one of the Roman centurions assigned
to execute Christ. Hundreds don centurion masks and costumes, and arm themselves with
wooden swords and shields; running amok and engaging in sword fights, dances and
sneaky pranks on bystanders. You have been warned!
NAGA CITY MUSEUM
Museum
This small museum, located on the campus of the University of Nueva Caceras, is one of
the oldest museums in the country. It is ethnographic in focus, filled with crafts, tools and
other artifacts of pre-colonial Bicol.
DARAGA CHURCH
Church
Set on a hill splendidly overlooking Mt Mayon is the baroque-style Daraga Church, con-
structed completely from volcanic rock in 1773 and with detailed sculpted reliefs on the
columns.
RODEO MASBATEÑO
Event
Whoop, yip, rant and roar with all the local cowpokes during the second week of April in
Masbate Town. Events include bull riding, barrel racing (a kind of slalom for horse and
rider) and tiedown roping. If you've got animal ethics issues with rodeos, you may want to
avoid this event.
