BENCAB MUSEUM
Museum
The Baguio museum dedicated to the life, times and work of Benedicto Reyes Cabrera -
otherwise known as BenCab - is as fascinating as the man who is its subject. Come to ex-
perience Filipino crafts and modern art in a space that evokes both ultramodernism and is
partly modelled after a traditional rice terrace.
ST PAUL CATHEDRAL
Church
This church in Vigan was built in 'earthquake baroque' style (ie thick-walled and
massive) after an earlier incarnation was damaged by two quakes in 1619 and 1627. The
construction of the original wooden, thatched church is believed to have been supervised
by Salcedo himself in 1574. The brass communion handrails were made in China.
TAM-AWAN VILLAGE
Village
Eight traditional Ifugao homes and two rare octagonal Kalinga huts were taken apart and
reassembled at this artists' village on the northwest edge of the city. Here you can parti-
cipate in art workshops, learn to make a dream-catcher and attend indigenous music and
dance demonstrations.
VIGAN WEAVERS
Craft
Vigan weavers are known for using a locally produced cotton fabric called abel to
handweave shawls, tablecloths, napkins and barong (traditional Filipino shirts). In
Camanggaan, just a 10-minute tricycle ride southeast of Vigan, you can watch abel
handweavers in action at Rowilda's weaving factory.
