Public Reserve Lands
The State of Maine also holds more than 500,000 acres in Public Reserve
Lands, which are open to the public. These generally lack facilities
beyond hiking trails or the occasional gravel road to a hand-carry boat
launch site. Some are almost inaccessible. A good way to picture these
places are as undeveloped state parks.
Public Reserve Lands are open to hunting and are also harvested for tim-
ber for pulp, paper, and saw logs.
All together, there are 29 areas ranging in size from about 500 acres to
more than 40,000. Fees are not charged.
For more information, write or call the Bureau of Parks and Lands, 22
State House Station, Augusta 04333.

Adventuring In Maine
Hiking
Maine has the best forest, mountain and above tree-line hiking in the
East. Dozens of state parks preserve the best peaks, while the White
Mountains National Forest has extensive holdings in the state with
many well-marked trails.
